All District Schools Closed Thursday (Jan 9)

Dear San Gabriel Unified School District Community,

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this challenging time. This week’s windstorm and its aftermath have created uncertainty and hardship for many in our community, and we appreciate your cooperation as we work to prioritize everyone’s safety.

After careful consideration, ALL San Gabriel Unified schools and the district office will remain CLOSED on Thursday, January 9, 2025, due to ongoing impacts from the windstorm on our campuses, community, and staff.

High winds are forecast to continue through Wednesday evening, and we will need time to thoroughly inspect facilities and prepare for the return of students and staff. While our campuses have fared well thus far, the air quality is expected to remain poor due to excessive dust from the winds and the smoke and ash from the fires. Additionally, a significant number of our staff members are currently under evacuation orders, which will impact school operations and staffing levels.

At this time, we are prioritizing the health and safety of our community. We will continue to monitor conditions and hope to return all students and staff to campuses on Friday, January 10 so long as conditions improve. We will provide an update on Thursday about our plans to reopen on Friday. Please check your emails, ParentSquare, and social media for updates.

Our hearts go out to those in our community who have lost their homes or are currently dealing with evacuation orders. Please know that you remain in our thoughts during this difficult time.

We encourage families to take necessary precautions during this time:

  • Limit outdoor activities, especially for those with respiratory conditions.
  • Keep phones/laptops charged in case of power outages.
  • Follow local authorities’ instructions and updates regarding evacuation orders and road safety.

Thank you again for your support and understanding. Stay safe, and we will keep you informed of any further changes.

Sincerely,

Jim Symonds
Superintendent
