Gabrielino High School has been ranked in the top 6 percent of schools in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in recognition of a commitment to equity for every student and emphasis on college and career readiness.
With an overall score of 94.93, Gabrielino is ranked 130 out of nearly 2,500 high schools in California. Each school’s score correlates to its percentile position in the national rankings on the 2019 Best High Schools survey.
“This recognition is a perfect conclusion to Gabrielino’s silver anniversary year and exemplifies the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff and students in pursuing strategies that create graduates with 21st century skills, ready for the careers of the future,” Principal Sharron Heinrich said.
Gabrielino had a 97 percent graduation rate in 2018 with 55 percent of students admitted to a four-year college or university. The school’s mathematics proficiency is more than double the state average.
Gabrielino offers 22 Advanced Placement courses that challenge students to embrace college-preparatory coursework and potentially earn college credits. The school boasts a robust college and career center with a dedicated career technical education (CTE) counselor who aids with college planning and applications, financial aid and scholarship opportunities.
U.S. News evaluated more than 17,000 public high schools across the country and, for the first time, ranked them from top to bottom, both nationally and at the state level.
Revamping its methodology, U.S. News used six ranking factors to measure academic quality, including college readiness, college curriculum, math and reading proficiency and performance, underserved student performance, and graduation rate.
“Gabrielino High School scholars distinguish themselves in so many ways, meeting the challenges of high expectations with rigor and enthusiasm,” SGUSD Superintendent Dr. John Pappalardo said. “Congratulations to Sharron Heinrich and her hard-working, dedicated faculty and staff for this tremendous recognition.”
